Description

Artist’s Biography/Statement:

My work is a celebration of the woman’s body, resilience, and beauty—especially the beauty of the scarred body of a survivor In many of my paintings the women are mastectomy survivors whose scars are gold to resemble Kintsugi, the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with gold making the mended pottery much more beautiful and more valuable that the unbroken pottery. The painting, Half Cut Apple, while a straight forward depiction of an apple, is also yonic symbolism for the wholesome beauty of a woman’s most intimate and private body parts.

Alice Shands lives in Memphis. She began painting 20 years ago after Her artist husband died of cancer. She is a stage 4 breast cancer survivor who finds inspiration in women who have survived and excelled despite illness, handicaps, and hardships.
