Artist Biography:

I’m a North Carolina native who has lived in Colorado, Tennessee, and now Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC with degrees in Elementary Education and Psychology but art has always been my true love. In a picture of my nursery school class, all the other children are seated at long tables but I am standing in the back by the easel, brush in hand. I have taken art classes and workshops for decades but consider myself mostly self-taught. We are enthusiastic supporters of our local arts community.

Artist Statement:

I started this painting several years ago while taking an online class with the artist Flora Bowley, author of the book Brave Intuitive Painting. Underneath, there are layers upon layers of bold marks that were created with brushes, sponges, stamps, pouring, dripping, and even smooshing with my bare fingers. As the often transparent layers were built up with a wild abandon, I started to see images emerge from the chaos, and I gently cajoled them into being — images of peace, hope, nature, and a glorious rebirth from the pain of oppression. It is my most ardent (and possibly naive) wish that all the people of the world will one day live lives of true liberation from racism, sexism, transphobia, hunger, war, environmental degradation, forced labor, and forced birth. “You may say I’m a dreamer . . . “  ~ John Lennon  First step: Vote the bastards out!
